Lucy Goff: Why I Founded LYMA

A near-fatal illness, a chance meeting, and the origin of LYMA's founder philosophy.

In 2012, LYMA founder Lucy Goff was fighting for her life. What followed - a serious illness, a chance meeting with one of the world's leading scientists, and years spent chasing a better answer - became the foundation of one of the most talked-about wellness brands in the world.

This is Lucy Goff's founder story, told in her own words.

A crisis that changed everything

After the birth of her daughter in 2012, Lucy fell dangerously ill with septicemia. She spent six weeks in hospital, riddled with toxins, and was told by doctors that a full recovery was far from guaranteed. In the months that followed, she saw a series of physicians who prescribed a convoluted mix of medications and supplements. None of it worked. Some of it made her feel worse.

“I was fast losing faith in the medical profession,”

Lucy has said of that period.

With a newborn baby and a husband at home, giving up wasn't an option. She knew there had to be a better way to get well.

The meeting that sparked LYMA

In 2013, a chance encounter changed the course of Lucy's life - and, eventually, an entire industry. She met Professor Paul Clayton, a clinical pharmacologist and one of the world's leading authorities on preventative disease and pharmaconutrition. He told her something most supplement brands never say out loud: that the majority of products on the shelf simply aren't formulated to outperform a healthy, balanced diet.

Prof. Clayton prescribed Lucy a new kind of protocol - peer-reviewed, patented ingredients, dosed at clinically active levels, sourced and formulated so the body could actually absorb them. This became the model behind the science behind LYMA.

“After just one month, I felt like myself again,” Lucy recalls. “In fact, I felt better than I had in years.”

Founding a company built on evidence

That recovery became the catalyst for LYMA. Lucy and Prof. Clayton set off travelling the world, seeking out the best scientific minds they could find, with one goal: to build a supplement backed by evidence rather than marketing claims. LYMA Supplement launched in 2018 - and the wider supplement industry hasn't looked the same since.

Lucy remains outspoken about the lack of regulation across the wellness industry. She has been vocal that many products sold today mislead consumers about their real benefits, and believes people deserve to know exactly what they're taking, and why - a conviction that continues to shape how LYMA approaches product development today.

Why evidence-based means something at LYMA

For Lucy, “evidence-based” isn't a marketing term - it's the whole premise. Every ingredient in the LYMA Supplement is chosen because it has been through peer review, is patented, and is dosed at a level shown to be effective, not just present on a label. It's the model Prof. Clayton first showed her in 2013, and it's the model LYMA has followed for every product launch since, from the Laser to LYMA Skincare and LYMA ID².

A female founder with a bigger mission

Lucy is candid about what it means to have built LYMA as a female founder in an industry historically dominated by men. It's a part of her story she's proud of, and one she uses to encourage other women to back their own ideas, even when the odds - or the industry - say otherwise.

That mission extends beyond LYMA's product range. The brand has partnered with charitable initiatives, including The Prince's Trust, supporting programmes that help young women build confidence, skills and opportunity - a cause close to Lucy's own founder story.

In Lucy's own words

On the power of change

“Change is often the antithesis of the way humans naturally tend to live,” Lucy says. “But change is around us all the time, and I'm a big believer in accepting it - welcoming the opportunities and challenges that come with it. Life without change is uneventful and predictable.”

“Once you find a way of harnessing change for the positive, change is exhilarating.”

On her biggest challenge

Starting LYMA, Lucy says, remains the most challenging thing she has ever done. “It was never my intention to take on an entire industry with a new category of evidence-based nutrition. I was just passionate about bringing a formula to market that had, quite literally, saved my life.”

How LYMA changed her life

“LYMA gave me the strength to bring the formula to market when everyone was telling me not to,” Lucy reflects. “It's connected me with people with similar stories I'd never otherwise have met. It's made me realize that failing at school isn't a reason not to follow your dreams.”

How she winds down

Away from LYMA, Lucy's evenings are simple: putting her daughter to bed, reading together by torchlight, and catching up with her husband once the house is quiet. It's a reminder, she says, of why she does any of this in the first place.

The mission continues

More than a decade after that hospital stay, Lucy's mission hasn't changed: to put the power to change your life into your own hands, backed by evidence, not guesswork. Every product in the LYMA ecosystem exists because one woman refused to accept that “good enough” was good enough.
