Photobiomodulation, at a clinically meaningful dose
Near-infrared light absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase raises
mitochondrial ATP output, which drives fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis. The mechanism is well described and has more than 60 years of clinical use behind it.
The constraint has always been dose at depth. Photobiomodulation is biphasic, so an insufficient dose does nothing and an excessive one reverses the effect. Coherent, collimated light holds irradiance as it travels, which is what makes a therapeutic dose at dermal depth achievable in a device a patient can hold.
